S S Palanimanickam won from Thanjavur on a DMK candidate for the fifth consecutive time. He defeated his nearest rival Durai Balakrishnan of MDMK by 101,789 votes. He has served as Minister of State for Finance earlier.
He was general-secretary of the All India Peace and Solidarity, Tamil Nadu Unit. He has worked for the upliftment of weaker sections of the society by providing them facilities such as schools, medical camps, drinking water and link roads etc. His special interests lies rural education and upliftment of the rural youth.
