14th Lok Sabha Elections 2004 - Some Facts
  • The size of the electorate in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections was about 671.4 million. That is more than twice the population of the third most populous country in the world – the United States.
  • The 2004 elections involved 687,402 polling booths spread over the 28 states, 6 Union territories and one National Capital Territory 
  • The number of electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in the 2004 elections exceeded 10.75 lakh.
  • A total of 5,435 candidates – about 10 per seat on average – contested the 2004 elections. As many as 4,218 lost their security deposits. 
  • The expenditure for conducting the 2004 general elections was an estimated Rs 1,300 crore. Back in 1952, the first general elections, the amount was less than Rs 10.5 crore
