Ajay Maken's political career has been consistent. In 1993 he became a member of Legislative Assembly of Delhi for the first time. He first stepped into the limelight after becoming the President of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in 1985. While still the President of DUSU, Ajay Maken became a trade-union leader embracing the legacy of his uncle Lalit Maken, a renowned trade union leader. Later on, as the Parliamentary Secretary to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and in the role of Transport, Power and Tourism Minister in the Sheila's cabinet, Maken proved his administrative capabilities. 

In 2004 he became an MP after defeating BJP's Jagmohan. Since 2005 Ajay Maken has been the Minister of State Of Urban Development, Government of India. He has played a key role in finalising the Master Plan for New Delhi.
