Jairam Ramesh who represents Andhra Pradesh in Rajya Sabha, was the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry as well as the Minister of State for Power in the Congress-led UPA government until late February 2009 when he resigned to concentrate on strategy for the Indian general election, 2009. He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. In 2001, IIT Bombay presented him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
