Prof K V Thomas won by a majority of 11,700 votes from the Ernakulam constituency of Kerala on a Congress ticket in the 2009 general elections. Thomas won the Ernakulam constituency his nearest rival Kumari Sindhu Joy of the CPM.
A Chemistry professor, he was a sitting MLA representing the Ernakulam assembly seat. Earlier, he was a minister in the Kerala government.
